Dear @Afraser, Maybe your fuzzy rampant purple thingy is a California Lilac (Ceoanthus). The colour is just right and there are different varieties. Hope someone else can confirm for us.
Many thanks @jennyss, I got quite excited about that when I heard of it too. But the leaves are quite different and the California lilac flowers are still quite similar to British lilac. The flowers on this plant have a quite hairy look!
Thank you @iserbrown that’s exactly what it is - perennial ageratum. Mine isn’t as lengthy but definitely same buds/leaves. Has a tendency to become untidy, says Jane Edmondson. Too true. But she also says they are short lived - mine has been there for thirty years! Many thanks all.
@afraser I didn't know what your flower was but I thought the leaves looked like lilac and the flowers like ageratum - I obviously had the scale all wrong in my mind as I thought it was a large bush!

I didn't have to walk far for these - one in our kitchen & the other on our rear deck ...... both from my brother after my surgery in Jan '18

Lake St Clair, Tasmania. What a difference a day makes. First morning was windy with small waves. This morning fog and not a breath of breeze.
