Hello,

Given you are attending the Field of Women 2014 on Saturday 10 May, we thought you might be interested to approach your local media and get coverage of the fact you'll be taking part.

We have drafted a template media release we are encouraging our members to complete, personalise and send on to local media outlets.

If you would like a copy of the template media release please email media@bcna.org.au and we will send you a copy plus a high-res photo.

Below is a brief 'how-to' guide on approaching the media.

If you have any questions or aren't sure where to send it on to email us and we can provide you with the contact details for your local newspaper etc.

Cheers,

Laura

 Step-by-step: Approaching your local media

  1. Edit the media release and save it on your own computer. Feel free to change it as much as you like and add in any extra personal details you would like to include. Remember to include your contact details!
  2. Make sure you emphasise the 'local' angle as this is what will interest your local media outlets
  3. Call the local paper and find out what the best email address is to send it to (also worth having a quick chat if you can with them about what you are doing and what you'll send through)
  4. Create a new email and copy and paste the content from the media release into the email
  5. Remember to also attach the media release and the photo
  6. Give the email a catchy & localised subject line - such as 'Launceston woman travelling to Melbourne for breast cancer Field of Women' or 'Launceston woman joining 15,000 others on MCG to support breast cancer'
  7.  In the email, above the media release content, give a brief introduction and include your contact number - such as 'Hello, my name is Laura and I am a breast cancer survivor from Launceston. I will be travelling to Melbourne to take part in the Field of Women on the MCG with 15,000 people to support breast cancer. I thought you might be interested in running a story. I have attached a media release and a photo of the last Field of Women event. I can be contacted on 0421 784 254. Kind regards, Laura
  8. Send off the release - don’t forget to attach the release & photo, and include your contact details!
  9. A week or so later, it's worth following up with a phone call

GOOD LUCK!
