Hello everyone and welcome to Fridays update.   How fast have the last couple of weeks gone, we are already in early March!  There is lots happening at BCNA with work underway for BCNA’s 20th Anniversary celebrations.

A great article was posted in the online forum titled “Breaking taboos: talking about the sexual side effects of breast cancer treatment”. It featured interviews with BCNA’s Director of Programs and Services, Kirsten Pilatti and our very own @SoldierCrab.

New online network members

We have had 96 new members join our online forum in the last 2 weeks.  Welcome everyone!  Here’s some information to get you going.

In the news

As discussed in the last update, we will be introducing our online network moderators and other BCNA staff in each Friday update. This week its Rosie’s turn.

@Rosie_BCNA

Thank you for this opportunity to introduce myself to the online community. My name is Rosie and I joined BCNA in March 2017 with my first day being at Summit on the Sunshine Coast – lucky me! This was a wonderful introduction to BCNA and I was able to meet many women and men who are actively engaged with the organisation.  My role is Program Coordinator of the Helpline where I work with a team of cancer nurses and Helpline officers.  I am a Registered nurse with extensive experience in community nursing, research, and cancer care, including working in a Chemotherapy Day Unit, a community palliative care service, psychosocial research unit and the Cancer Council Victoria – Information and Support Service. Prior to joining BCNA, I worked with the Royal District Nursing Service but I really missed working within the cancer sector. Outside work I love catching up with my friends, doing yoga, travelling if I get a chance, and spending time with Andrew, my husband, and our miniature schnauzer, Mr. Chompolicious AKA Chompo.

BCNA 20th Anniversary Field of Women

We are thrilled to announce that we will celebrate our 20th anniversary in 2018 with our fifth Field of Women.

In 2018, it is estimated that 18,235 Australians will be diagnosed with breast cancer.  Our aim is to have this number represented by women, men and children in the shape of BCNA’s Pink Lady.

The Field of Women will take place on Sunday 12 August at the MCG during Round 21 of the AFL match between Melbourne and the Sydney Swans.

The event will also coincide with the Plan B Survivorship conference that will take place on Saturday 11 August at The Glass House, Melbourne.

  • It doesn't take much to confuse these days...I would just think I had the day wrong.
  • Hello @SoldierCrab
We are sending it out tomorrow (Monday) just to confuse you all!
Sorry, should have let everyone know. I was waiting for some further information for the update, prior to posting.

  • Hi there giovanna. I’ve heard from Chloe and she has penciled me in thanks. X
  • Hello @onemargie
Thanks for your question and my apologies for the late reply.  My college Chloe is coordinating this event and is happy to be contacted directly.  Her email is cdouglas@bcna.org.au or can be contacted via our helpline 1800 500 258.
  • Hi there @Giovanna_BCNA what’s involved with volounteering at the bcna pink lunch in Brisbane and how can I get involved. Might be able to recruit a few for you too if needed. Margie xx
  • I have had such an wonderful experience using this helpline.  I don't know even where to start.  At the beginning, being welcomed, have a resource to access and ask questions about procedures, reports, expectations, what things really meant, when I was feeling so overwelmed and overrun by white noise.  Knowing there were so many people (and some who stepped up in a such a way) understanding what I was going through and willing to give their perspective and/or call on others who could perhaps give better.  Real help with research through personal experiences, advice and assistance but never "in you face".  Laughter when I most needed it. Support, of which I have tried in my own way to give back.  Almost none of these women (and men) will I ever meet face to face but they are there with me every day while I am trying to negotiate this minefield.  So, have I had a good experience?  Too right.

However, if you want one that is easily quantified and led to a medical-type decision made, the Port or not to Port discussion was excellent.  I have actually referred others outside this group to that.  Everything else just falls into the general amazing.
