Landmark progress as Victoria counts every person living with metastatic breast cancer

For the first time, Victoria has counted everyone living with metastatic breast cancer in the state, marking a major step forward for visibility, recognition, and support.

New data released by the Victorian Cancer Registry (VCR) estimates that 4,461 Victorians are living with metastatic breast cancer, making them visible in the health system and ensuring their needs can are not overlooked.

This achievement is the result of decades of consumer-led advocacy by Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA), collaboration with the Victorian Cancer Registry and Cancer Council Victoria, and the determination of women living with metastatic breast cancer who have long called for change.

  • A great start - Hard to believe the other states/Territories haven't actioned it yet. .....

    Mez_BCNA Is there any official data on any 'other' Stage 4 cancer numbers in Australia?   Or is it currently 'just' Breast Cancer that is now being 'counted'?

      arpie there isn't official data on any other stage 4 cancer numbers.  We hope this work in the breast cancer space can be a national and international blueprint that enable other cancers to be counted as well.

        Thanks Mez_BCNA  .... That is absolutely astonishing!  How on earth can the various Gov/Health Depts possibly plan for future costings of Specialists, hospital beds, amounts of specialised drugs and all other associated costs - if they don't even know current numbers of all those with Mets, let alone where they are.  Grrrr

        All they have to do is get all Pathology Depts to send a monthly listing of Newly Diagnosed Stage 4 patients to a central database - that will show where & how many there are .... to enable efficient & proper costings.

  • Another important step forward- well done to all the advocates and BCNA!

      Mez_BCNA do you know if they all use the same methodology?

      It would be interesting to know where the data comes from.

        Hey Cath62

        What we do know is NSW has shared its methodology with the other states to support them to report on their data.

        (I've taken a snippet below from ministerial media release)

        By linking cancer incidence and mortality data with NSW clinical datasets, Commonwealth Medicare Benefits Schedule, Pharmaceutical Benefits Schedule and National Death Index data, the Institute was able to determine the number of people living with metastatic breast cancer in NSW.

  • Great news .  The total now for the states that have done the sums:

    NSW = 7,900

    QLD = 3,863

    VIC = 4,461

    Running total: 16,224

    3 down come on Act. WA NT and SA

  • Absolutely great news.  Congratulations to all who made it happen. Now this will put pressure on the other states and territories.
