Re: My journey of B C
Hi @"Butterfly 40" like you i was also diagnosed just before Christmas 2016. I am also a nurse working in community. Told my upper manager by showing him the results as I couldn't get the words out and asked him to tell my manager but with strict confidentiality, it was just before christmas and I felt bad enough spoiling my family's Christmas. I did tell my team just before I went on leave to have surgery. I am fortunate to have lots sick leave and because the day to go back to work was only a couple of days before booked annual leave i chose to run the two together. Have kept in contact with a few colleagues and asked them to update the rest. Have told a few friends including one who is an 8 year survivor and we have compared treatments and scars. This was very helpful. BC seems to touch so many people-hairdresser I went to before surgery her mother and grandmother had bc with many years survival and my best friends mother is a 30 year survivor. Will have radiotherapy after my trip and not sure how this will affect me but I have oodles of sick leave anyway and only work 3 days a week now so hopefully will manage around this. In the past work was my safehaven after death of my husband 8 years ago, would be fine with clients, though would bawl between them in car, pick myself up and go onto the next. Am sure you will find your balance.6Views0likes0CommentsRe: Decision time - lumpectomy or masectomy?
Hi isaidso wonderful news that sentinel node was clear. Keep being kind to yourself and letting others nurture you if you have the support. Hope all goes well on Thursday and the next few days not too stressful. I was a mess before getting my results last Saturday but the ladies here were a great support.49Views0likes0CommentsRe: Lumpectomy and Lymph Node Clearance
Wonderful results @tanyal yes am also having some pain and itching at drain site and itching underarm 12 days post op. Good advice to get it checked especially if red around areas. God idea to keep an eye on your temperature too. Also good to keep up pain meds if needed. Does take time for healing to occur and every symptom can be worrying but better to check it out if concerned. Good luck with your recovery.9Views0likes0CommentsRe: All Clear happy and healthy, BUT pre admission tomorrow for Mastectomy/Recon struggling mentally..
Sending you big hugs @melclarity a recurrence is a real fear on this journey. I am only new here but know it is one of the things I fear too. You have a right to be angry and grieve the loss of your breast, no matter how battered it is -it is still your breast!! You have tried so hard to fight this disease but sometimes you need to give yourself a breather to regroup and restore your energy. I know very well the feelings of uncertainty and just as I can't know exactly how you are feeling, perhaps when you have a date for surgery you will have a plan to hold onto. You may then be able to say "bring it on" and make plans. Use every support you can, it may be very therapeutic for your dad to support you, and even if it does bring up stuff for him, you are still his daughter and sounds like he wants to be there for you. It is very easy to go into protector mode (we are mums after all) but sometimes the greatest gift we can give someone is allowing them to be there for us when we need it. Great that your children's father is able to step up for them too. On a practical note -having things at home arranged so you can reach them without having to reach up is good. I moved my microwave down from above my head to kitchen bench and had plates etc down too so they were easily accessible. I got people to put loads of washing on and used drier where possible so no washing had to be put on line above my head. Folding up washing was my arm exercises done- more useful than those in pamphlet and now putting dishes back so I have to reach again. Again hugs ans will be thinking of you.12Views0likes0CommentsRe: Just diagnosed but cannot even contact a surgeon until 9th January. Stress levels high.
Thanks everyone for your good wishes. Yes it is a relief but this is one step on the journey we are all on. This has changed my life forever. The risk of recurrence will always be there, but for now I'm determined to put it out of my mind and enjoy whatever the future brings. Had great fun discussing and planning shore tours with my daughter yesterday for our upcoming cruise in 9 days. Will think about radiotherapy after I get back. @melclarity diagnosis was IDC stage Ia but surgeon said he would not consider hormone treatment at this stage as it had such a low mitotic level of 1. He did say he would take it to his team meeting on Tuesday though. So will see. Also HER2 results still pending.9Views0likes0CommentsRe: Just diagnosed but cannot even contact a surgeon until 9th January. Stress levels high.
Thanks for your support everyone it really helped Results good, if I had to have breast cancer apparently this tumour is the one to have!! :-) :-) Very low grade, small and "lazy" Margins clear and both lymph nodes clear. So all "gone", will still need radiotherapy but not even hormone tablets. Review at surgeon in 6 months but no mammogram for 12 months!! :-) So now I can go on my cruise in 11days with another daughter and relax. Yes I know I will have to have radiotherapy when I return but that will be just a "bump" in my journey followed by just surveillance for next 10 years hopefully!!6Views0likes0Comments
