- sandramjMemberI'm 66 and had surgery earlier this month and understand the SPIN that occurs when diagnosis of breast cancer is made. We are entitled to second opinions (&3if we want) and I'd encourage you find someone your Mum "resonates" with. It's REALLY important to feel safe and that you are important to your Doctor. My daughter has accompanied me to all the important appointments and I've never had so many tests in such a short time, but very grateful the cancer was removed so quickly AND the tests and research tells us so much. Presume you have the breastcare pack - if not chase that up as it's a fabulous resource. The posts on here have been fabulous for me and the lovely ladies accept and support even my sometimes scrambled ranting.
We are all here to listen, chat and support you and your Mum. Keep communication ❤️ - socodaMemberHi @tinango, I realise everything is probably all set to go now but I had my surgery at Auburn hospital with a oncoplastic surgeon who also works through Breast screen. I live at Campbelltown and was quite happy to travel to Fairfield where my surgeon has her rooms. Willing to answer any questions. All the best for your mum. Xx Cath
- brightspaceMemberHi tinango if you are private i can recommend breast centre at strathfield private hosp for surgery and chemo.
radiation tratments are at public facilities - primekMemberJust something to think in future. If you have a scanner at home you can use that and get an email address to send to. Failing that...photograph the documents, then email. But yes...so frustrating to have to wait.
- AnonymousIt's really difficult when you live a distance away from treatment. It took me 4 weeks to get a diagnosis and treatment started due to living so far away from the appropriate care. It is frustrating, glad to read that you are aiming at the best for your Mum.
Trace xxx - tinangoMemberMum is based in Lakemba but we're happy to travel to Liverpool to get the best treatment/care. I've told reception that our GP has referred us to the centre and that we have our test results from biopsies etc. We have to fax the test results to them before we make an appointment, which is such a hassle as I have to wait for another day to grab the documents from home then come to work and fax the documents to them. I just want to lock something in already, it's making me anxious.
- AnonymousHi tinango and welcome to this site, as the girls have advised it is variable with every individual. If you go to the next appointment with your Mum, take a note pad and pen and ask lots of questions. The better informed you are the better placed you are to make any decisions. The help information on this site isuseful to refer while you are going through the next couple of appointments. Just take it 1 day at a time, sending you and your Mum a big cuddle, Trace xxx
- primekMemberDid you let them know that she hasn't seen a breast surgeon yet? You can always ring and just confirm if this is normal process. Might be how they do it there. Have they got the pathology /scans also? That might determine the order. Glad you have a referral to a centre you are more comfortable with. Kath x
- SoldierCrabMemberAT the Westmead BC institute you see the whole team initially. Where is mum based ?
- tinangoMemberThanks ladies, yes she doesn't feel comfortable going to Bankstown. Our GP has referred us to Liverpool hospital. I called up the number and was transferred to Cancer Therapy Centre where we will be meeting with an Oncologist. Is that normal to see an Oncologist first? Initially when we were referred to Bankstown, we were going to see a Breast surgeon. Thoughts??
