Tamoxifen causing weight loss

Within about 2 weeks of starting Tamoxifen, I noticed that I was losing weight quite quickly. Out of interest, I have been weighing myself every day since noticing this. Most days I lose 500g, occasionally it varies a little with the most lost in one day being 1.5kg. On the flip side, if I have a day of eating badly, I put it on just as quickly (2kg in one day!). Overall, I've lost 6kg since Feb 1st.

While I have been trying to eat better, it is a lot of weight to be consistently losing. As I'm at least 30kg overweight, I'm not worried about it for the moment... quite liking this side effect.

Has anyone experienced the same? I see a lot of comments about putting on weight or having trouble losing weight but nothing about this kind of loss.

  • Sounds good. If you start feeling unwell or nauseated get checked out sooner. Sometimes our liver can be upset for a bit following chemo...and following rapid weight loss.
  • Thanks Primek... I've never been one to lose this much. I have tried to change my diet to be healthier and I'm aware that it has probably contributed. I don't drink alcohol but I do drink a lot of coke zero. Rarely nauseated and still not sure if my appetite has decreased... I'm eating less because I've cut out most of the snacking I used to do.

I had appointments at the hospital yesterday so I spoke to some of the staff there... The breast care nurses think it's my body resettling after chemo and have asked the Physiotherapist (who is currently seeing me every few days) to keep an eye on me. They think that as long as I don't have other pains then I am probably fine but should speak to the Oncologist if I go past my pre-chemo weight.

The Physiotherapist mentioned that she has had 1 other patient with the same issue who had loads of tests done but didn't find the cause that she knows of. She doesn't know what ended up happening with that patient once the physio stopped.

I'm expecting a call today from somebody in the oncology department to discuss it further. I'm hoping we find the lips that Zoffiel mentioned
  • If you're not actively trying to lose weight I would get it checked out by your gp just to be safe.
  • If you haven't been a daily weigher before you might not be aware it's not uncommon to fluctuate weight of up to 2 kg per day...depending on time of month (which I gather may have stopped now for you) salt retention, fluid loss etc. A total of 6 kg is a lot to lose in 4 weeks unless you have dramatically changed your diet. So think about...
-Have you cut out lots of processed foods?
-Have you stopped drinking sweetened soft drink?
    -Have you suddenly stopped alcohol?
-Has your appetite decreased or are you nauseated?
If it's no to any of these things then you might need to discuss it with a GP or your prescribing Dr...sooner rather than later just to ensure no issues.

  • That story is almost enough to make me want to take it...
Seriously though, unexplained weight loss, particularly if it is significant, can be an indication of other problems. Or it could just mean you've been kissed on the butt by the weight loss fairy. Best get your GP to have a bit of a look to see if there is anything hinky with your blood sugar, thyroid function etc. With any luck all they will find a perfect set of tiny lip marks on your diminishing backside.
  • I'm thinking lucky me, as well. The documentation I have says that weight loss or gain is a side effect. I do plan on speaking to one of the medical team about it soon.
  • Hi must say I'm thinking lucky you however I haven't heard of weight loss on Tamoxifen. Keep a record and check with breast care nurse or Gp. It could be something else unrelated to Tamoxifen.
    Take care
