Zoladex

Hi all,
I am 46, pre menopausal and due to hormone positive breast cancer, I will need to start Zoladex injections every month following radiation treatment. I was wanting to know other peoples experiences with Zoladex especially in regards to side effects.
Thanks in advance.
  • Hi that is a loaded question.  I have been on Zoladex injections for 15 months and some months are better than others.  Main problem though who is the real culprit with the side effects when I consider the other medications I am on.  I don't look forward to them however as time has gone on I find I am better.  Initially I found I was feeling off and yuck for 3 weeks and have one good week.  The injection is in the abdomen area, a numbing injection first.  It is dissolvable.  It is the hormones adjusting to the regime and we are all different to the way we react.
You'll be fine and it is for the better of you!  Take care from Christine xx
  • @Chabrittson I just did a quick search for you and found some more information about Zoladex  . I hope this helps you out some more.
  • Hi there I was on zoladex for 1 year the worst part was who gave the implant , depending on the skill it was sometimes very painful. My dr was hopeless I found the nurses the best. Not everyone is skilled at giving it. And honestly being blunt it looks like a horse needle. Lol my experience was severe joint pain when I stopped the injection so did the pain I had a complete hysterectomy as the zoladex was just temporary. I wish you luck and hope I haven't frightened you but it's best to be honest.  Adean
  • Hi,
I have been having Zoladex injections for 18 months now and I haven't noticed any side effects. I still get a few hot flushes every day, but I was getting those already from the Exemestane tablets I started taking a few months before Zoladex started. I find the injections do hurt, but I don't use numbing cream or anything. I have been offered it but I find the pain is just a bit more intense than a blood test and it only hurts for a few seconds and once the implant is in it stops hurting and you can't feel it at all. I agree with the comments above the person doing the injection makes a big difference! I have one of the two nurses at my GP do mine, depending on who is on the day I am scheduled. One was better than the other to start with, but to be honest they have had so much practice on me now they are both pretty good! Before me they had only given a Zoladex once or twice. Hope your injections go ok and your side effects are minimal!

  • Thanks Bec, just wondering because you have been having it for a while, wouldnt you move onto the 3 monthly injection?
  • My oncologist has never mentioned the 3 monthly injection to me, so not sure what the difference would be and if there is a reason she has not recommended it. Might ask her when I see her next!
